Howell Osborne was born and raised Bristol, VA. Howell ran around the
neighborhood with his Roy Roger’s guitar singing old Jimmy
Roger’s and Hank Williams tunes. While a young child he was
introduced to bluegrass, country, and gospel music, by his
uncle, Os Kessee, Os played a style of guitar known as "flatpicking". Os also
played a mean harmonica. One day Os came over and took a
wire coat hanger and bent Howell a harmonica holder and
said, “Now you are ready to play the harp and guitar at the
same time”, and he did. Howell soon learned to play
the guitar and harmonica just
like Os.

Howell’s dad purchased him a Gibson guitar when he was
around ten. Howell continued jamming with his family and
friends until one day he heard The Beatles on the radio. For
the next six years or so, it was electric guitars for him.
Then one day while driving down the road, the local Rock
Radio station played, “I Can Tell You Never Been This Far
Before”, by Conway Twitty. Howell says he turned his dial to
the country station to find that song again. While listening
he heard another country song, "When We Get
Behind Closed Doors” by Charlie Rich. That day Howell pulled
out his old Gibson guitar and sang them songs to his wife.
Ever since, Howell has been playing them old country,
bluegrass and gospel songs.
Howell joined his first bluegrass/gospel band in 1972.
Howell started out performing with the Sahara Brother.
Howell has played in bands such as the Bristol Boys, Gospel
Grass, Redi-Mix, Branded, Cimarron and The Sounds of
Bluegrass. Some of Howell's influences are Larry Sparks,
Blue Highway, Seldom Scene, Charlie Pride and Merle Haggard.
In addition to playing guitar, Howell also plays, mandolin,
bass, harmonica and autoharp.
